Root Art

My husband likes to drink Goose Island root beer.  I always find the bottle caps lying around in the kitchen.
I have started a bottle cap collection.

Or the opportunity for a recyled project! I think these tops are pretty than your average beer bottle gray cap because they are white, PLAIN white... with possiblities.

I am in the middle of painting a magnet wall for my son and I have one magnet- good ole Vitavetavitamin. Although she is dazzling, she is NOT enough for the wall.  I want all the letters of the alphabet and numbers 0-9.

This means, honey, that you need to drink 36 bottles of root beer...hmmmm THIRSTY!

Since I told my husband the plan- he happened to stumble upon some magnets at work and he brought them home.  I like free stuff, I wonder if he can bring home 34 more?

Here's how I started my alphabet- I looked through a magazine for letters, placed the bottle cap over the letter and traced around it.  I cut inside of my line and placed the letter on the bottom of the bottle cap.

First I tried clear tacky glue to seal it, but I didn't like how it turned out because it soaked through the magazine and discolored it a bit.  So, I poured clear dimensional modge podge in the bottle cap- much better.

I whipped out my trusty glue gun and glued the magnets to the top of the bottle caps. I have four letters finished, only 22 more letters and 10 numbers to go, but first I have to get on my husband about drinking root beer!

Here they are on my chalkboard

  1. Too funny - I was just trying to make some of these magnets and couldn't figure out what type of glue stuff to use! Thanks!! I tried epoxy...and I'm totally not liking how mine turned out (plus they have sat for over 24 hours and still aren't dry!!). I'm going to have to try the mod podge technique next time.
